FLOODING THE DAM OF EMOTIONS

Many of us have held our emotions for so long that when they finally come out, it’s like a dam breaking, and we can’t stop it.  For awhile there is an overwhelming flood of feelings coursing through our body as if consuming us and we stop functioning. We have what resembles a breakdown.

Often this takes us by surprise, when we are driving to work, watching a movie, or doing some random daily task. At the time we may not know why we are so emotional.  That’s because there was a trigger that set off the release.  Like something made that small crack in the dam.  What ever started the flood of feelings rushing out was just a catalyst for a much bigger, and much-needed catharsis.

When this happens, it’s important to allow it flow.  Don’t try to stop it.  Let it flow and eventually it will stop on its own.  This is telling us that we need to give our emotional system some over due attention.  It is essential that we allow ourselves to release the pent-up emotions inside ourselves so that they do not create imbalances in our bodies and minds.  It is an amazing feeling of relief once you go through and let all your emotions out.  There is a feeling of a weight lifted off your shoulders.

What ever you do don’t stop the flow, or try to hold it back because it is not the right time or place. Very few things in life happen at the right time or place.  So if you hold it back to when you get home from work it won’t happen.  There was a trigger that started the flood at that specific time.  There was a reason for it to happen at that point in time.  Always go with the flow of the universe and you will see that life will be much easier.

Once you are feeling better, make a plan to find a way to process your emotions more regularly. By taking time out of your day to allocate as ‘ME’ time, this helps to acknowledge your feelings on a regular basis.  You can take time out to meditate, take a nice long bath, go for a walk in nature, sit under a tree and write in a journal, etc..; the most important part is that you are doing something for you. By doing so, you are releasing any stress build up which causes any flood waters (your tears) to recede, and curtails any further more severe problems , down the road, if not taken care of at this point.

Making a habit of ME time is crucial to keeping your body, mind and spirit balanced and healthy in this day and age of hectic lifestyles.
